Reuters reported this week that U.S. stores of Toys R Us,the world’s largest toy retailer, will the Kindle and accessories starting tomorrow, July 31.
“Toys R Us plans to give a free $10 Toys R Us gift card to shoppers buying the popular e-reader at its stores from July 31 through August 6, while supplies last,” reported Reuters. (Reuters didn’t say how Toys R Us could run out of its own gift cards.)
The Reuters post said Toys R Us will carry models “including” Kindle Wi-Fi in graphite, Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi in graphite and Kindle Wi-Fi with Special Offers. “Including” is an interesting choice of words there. Is there another model that Toys R Us expects to carry, but is not allowed to announce yet?
We’ve been underwhelmed for years with Amazon’s rather languid approach to the “Kindle for Kids” market, but nothing would say Kindle to kids quite so much as a color, touch-enabled Kindle tablet selling in the $250 range in time for the coming holiday season.
“This is a generation of kids that have learned to communicate, search and purchase on very small devices, like mobile phones,” Forrester Research media analyst James McQuivey told the Boston Globe this week. “This year is a guinea pig year, next year will be en masse.”
